Biography of George Paxton

George was born in New York City into an artist family and raised on Long Island.  His father was a noted musician, bandleader, songwriter and publisher.  Growing up, George was exposed to a myriad of artistic expression.  At an early age, he showed an innate facility for the arts and began drawing and painting.

George has also learned by studying the masters. Classical sculptors, the likes of Michelangelo, Giambologna, and Bernini, as well as Rodin and Claudel, have had an impact on George’s creative process and his striving to develop a style of sculpture that displays a keen knowledge of anatomy and form merged with an understanding of how life and experience affect art.

He was educated at the Art’s Student League in New York, Columbia University, and at Vanderbilt, where he was the art editor of a campus magazine and the culture editor and arts columnist for the school newspaper.  After graduation from college, George went on to law school, graduated, and for many years engaged in a successful law practice with a respected Bethesda, Maryland and Washington, D.C. law firm.

But, never abandoning art, George sculpted, built a studio in his home, and pursued courses at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art Students’ League in Alexandria, Virginia.  During the last several years, George has studied sculpture near Pietrasanta, Italy, and has or is studying with such noted artists as Eugene Daub, Peter Rabino, Paul Lucchesi, Jay Hall Carpenter, Robert Liberace, and David Simon.

During the last few years, George has maintained his art studio in Vero Beach, Florida, and has taught figurative and portrait sculpture at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.  His work has been widely exhibited in juried shows and recently has won recognition:  1st Place in Sculpture, Art by the Sea, VBMA 2007; 2nd Place in Sculpture, Art by the Sea, VBMA 2008; 2nd Place, 4-County Florida Juried Art Exhibition, 2008 and 1st Place-Sculpture, Art By The Sea, Vero Beach Museum of Art, 2009.  His sculpture is in private collections from Scottsdale, Arizona, to Palm Beach, Florida, to Cannes, France. His next scheduled show is at the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery, Ft. Pierce, Florida in January, 2009.
